We explore Dartmoor, an atmospheric National Park of tors and bogs, with wild ponies roaming free.
We visit attractive Widdecombe-in-the-Moor of ‘Uncle Tom Cobley’ fame, which has a large church, known as the ‘Cathedral of the Moor’.
Later we cross the moor via Moretonhampstead, Postbridge and Princetown.
South Devon Steam & Sail Day
We travel to Paignton for a steam train ride on the dart Valley railway through beautiful scenery to Kingswear.
Later we enjoy a leisurely cruise on the river dart, passing Kingswear and Dartmouth Castles, the Royal Naval College and Greenway House, once owned by Agatha Christie.
Historic Plymouth & Saltram House
We travel to the historic port of Plymouth, forever associated with Sir Francis Drake and the Spanish Armada.
In the afternoon, we visit saltram house (National Trust, admission extra), a magnificent George II mansion with Robert Adam interiors and its original contents, set in an attractive landscaped park.
Brixham
Morning visit to Brixham, which has a lively harbour and waterfront.
Look out for a full size replica of Drake’s Golden Hind on the quay.
Two days at Leisure in Torquay
Torquay is full of surprises with its magnificent horseshoeshaped bay, swaying palm trees, elegant Victorian villas, pretty marina, sweeping sandy beach and its fascinating agatha Christie connections.
