We visit Alnwick Castle. The second largest inhabited castle in the country; home to the Duke of Northumberland's family, the Percys, for over 700 years.
Combining magnificent medieval architecture with sumptuous Italianate State Rooms, the castle's rich history is brimming with drama, intrigue, and extraordinary people.
It has also taken starring roles in a number of film and television productions, as the magnificent Brancaster Castle in Downton Abbey's 2014 Christmas Special and previously appearing as Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films.
We visit the nearby attractive market town of Hexham.
Later we explore Hadrian’s Wall. Begun in AD122 to stop raids from the Pictish tribes in the north, the wall was the edge of the Roman Empire.
Today large sections remain and we visit Chester’s (English Heritage,
admission extra), one of the best-preserved forts, with a fine collection of Roman ‘finds’.
We travel to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, one of the foremost religious sites in the world, where Saint Aidan established a monastery in 635AD.
We also visit Bamburgh which has an imposing castle and is also known for the exploits of Grace Darling.
Slaley Hall is an Edwardian mansion house, with a modern twist set in 1000 acres of Northumberland countryside, near Hexham.
It has a luxury spa, 2 PGA Championship golf courses, 3 restaurants and wonderful views.
